WATSONVILLE -- In the past two weeks at Ocean Speedway, racers have
broken track records, a grandmother in her 60s has been winning and
20-year-old Clay Daly -- a two-time state champion in IMCA modifieds --
managed a surprise finish in the late model stock car division.

In the Ocean late model stock car division, Watsonville's Daly made an
unexpected outside pass in the final corner of the last lap to reach the
checkered flag. Daly took the win away from Scotts Valley's Bobby Scott.

After starting last, Scott attained the top spot with eight laps remaining when
Daly found extra traction exiting turn four.

"On that last lap, I was scrambling to get the car to turn," Daly said. "With all the
rear end quickly or push like crazy toward the wall. I felt the car turn; I stood on
the gas and started to feel traction. At that point, it was hold on till I get to the
flag,' paying off big time."

Starting on the front row, Santa Cruz's Danny Scott and Salinas' Phil Priddy
traded the lead in the early laps. Both had won their heat races and Daly also
won the trophy dash.
